Japanese modern in the heart of Auckland.

The renovation and extension of this existing 1970s home in St Heliers bay, Auckland was designed to provide a modern Japanese aesthetic with simple forms and natural materials. The clients' brief was to create a space that was both functional and beautiful, and that would connect the interior of the home with the surrounding natural environment.

The new extension to the front of the house was designed with contrasting materials and simple forms, creating a striking visual impact. The use of natural materials such as wood and brick, coupled with large windows and doors, creates a seamless connection between the interior of the home and the outside environment.

The extension provides additional bedrooms, including a large master bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. The master bedroom is designed to be a peaceful retreat, with large windows that provide stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

The existing house was modernized to include a new open plan kitchen with a central island, creating a functional and practical space for cooking and entertaining.

New bi-folding doors were added to connect the family living space to the new large, generous deck, creating an indoor-outdoor flow that is perfect for entertaining and relaxing. The deck provides an ideal space for outdoor dining and entertaining.

Overall, this project successfully blends contrasting materials with simple forms, creating a modern Japanese aesthetic that is both functional and beautiful. The use of natural materials throughout the home creates a sense of harmony with the surrounding environment, and the indoor-outdoor flow of the space creates a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Newly re-modelled family kitchen and large bifolding doors to deck.
